7 Sure Signs That You’re Ovulating

There is always a hormonal shift during and before ovulation, but not so many women take note. Some women do experience various symptoms like breast tenderness, moodiness or headaches, but don’t worry if you don’t experience any of these, it doesn’t mean you’re not ovulating.
That is why I have listed these common signs that if you can learn them could help you predict when ovulation is likely to occur:
1. Cervical mucus changes – we have seriously dealt with this in a whole article post. Kindly click here to read more if you missed that.
In summary, to test your cervical mucous for ovulation, insert a clean finger into your vagina, then stretch out the mucous between your thumb and the finger. If it’s sticky and stretchy or very wet and slippery, that’s a good sign that you’re in a fertile phase.
2. Increased sense of smell – this may not happen to everyone but some women do experience an increased sense of smell in the half of their menstrual cycle, this can be a sign of ovulation. And in this fertile phase, your body is primed to be more attracted to the male pheromone androstenone.
3. Tenderness or soreness in the breast – heightened amount of hormones can result in breast and nipple sensitivity, and this can be another sign of ovulation.
4. Mild Pelvic or lower abdominal pain – ovulation can be felt in some women and it usually comes as a mild ache or pain in the lower abdomen, most times from one side or the other (it varies from side to side each time). The sensation, called Mittelschmerz can last between few minutes and a few hours and it is nothing to worry about.
The following can also be experienced; vaginal bleeding, discharge or nausea along with the ache or pain, these are usually mild and short-lived. But if ovulation pain is severe and persistent, see a doctor to rule out conditions such as endometriosis and ovarian cysts.
It is suggested to take note of your ovulation symptoms every month to know what is normal for your body, so you can easily spot any abnormal ovulation signs and symptoms.
5. Discharge or light spotting – spotting or having brown discharge during ovulation is common if not normal. This ovulation symptom can occur when the follicle that surrounds and protects the developing oocyte, or egg, matures, grows and then ruptures, resulting in a small amount of bleeding. And as blood gets older, it changes in colour to brown and this is the reason for red to dark brown vaginal discharge.
This should not be a cause for concern except the spotting persists, in which case you should see a physician to check for signs of infection and the possibility of ectopic pregnancy if you’ve been sexually active.
6. Change in libido – some women do notice an increase in their sex drive during ovulation, this may be nature’s way of wanting us to be fruitful and multiply.
7. Change in cervix – during ovulation, your cervix may become higher, softer and more open. You can check your cervix along with your mucous for ovulation symptoms. This can be quite difficult to learn at first, it is more difficult than watching for the other symptoms mentioned above.
In a previous article (click to read), I posted about how to check for cervical fluid should in case you don’t know how to check.
Here I will teach you how to check for a change in your cervix.
  • Take a position, preferably with one foot up (if you use tampons, take a position as though you want to insert a tampon), if you are in the toilet, you can put one foot on the closed toilet seat.
  • Use your finger to feel inside.
  • In many women with a regular menstrual cycle, right before ovulation, the cervix will be softer, you should have a feeling of touching your lips, but after ovulation, it will feel harder as though you are touching the tip of your nose.
  • An OB can also check for cervical changes using a speculum and help give you more guidance on how to do it at home.
